Can my camera accidently completely wipe out my SD Card memory without permission?

We are on a 6 week holiday in Europe. Have taken over 500 photos and videos on a 1gb SD card. I just checked and found that the camera is not reading anything on the card and have just 9 shots left, presumably on the camera's hard drive. The camera is a Kodak Easy Share CX7430.
