I bought a small single "hens & chicks" plant as an ornamental for the house. It died! How long do they last?

It was the small single well-drained pot. I had it for about a month and the leaves wilted and died off. I'd like to know how long they're supposed to last for or did I kill it someone. I'd like to learn more about this plant and how to care for it, indoors and outdoors. As an indoor plant, was it meant to die this fast? Should I keep it in the small pot with the roots and will it grow back?
