In a friend's house, they have new carpets upstairs and have banned outdoor shoes upstairs?

i think you have to pick your battles here. one person wearing shoes inside one time is not going to ruin the carpet. the homeowner needs their boiler fixed and they're gonna have to get it done sooner or later. better just to let the man wear his shoes and get his work done.
